Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Story

The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, or sacred lingams of Lord Shiva, located in the Mandhata Mountain on the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India. The word “Omkareshwar” is a combination of the words “Om” and “Kar”, which mean “the sound of Om” and “the form of Shiva”, respectively. The lingam at Omkareshwar is believed to be the manifestation of the sound of Om, which is considered to be the primordial sound of the universe.

There are many stories associated with the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. One legend tells the story of King Mandhata, who was the ruler of the Ikshvaku dynasty. King Mandhata was a devout devotee of Lord Shiva, and he performed many austerities to please the god. One day, Lord Shiva appeared to King Mandhata and told him that he would be pleased if the king built a temple for him on the Mandhata Mountain. King Mandhata immediately set about building the temple, and when it was finished, Lord Shiva manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga in the temple.

Another legend tells the story of the Vindhya Mountains. The Vindhya Mountains were once very small, but they became jealous of the Himalayas, which were much larger. The Vindhya Mountains prayed to Lord Shiva to make them taller than the Himalayas. Lord Shiva was pleased with the prayers of the Vindhya Mountains, and he granted their wish. However, he also warned the Vindhya Mountains that they should not cause any trouble to the pilgrims who traveled to the Himalayas.

The Vindhya Mountains agreed to Lord Shiva’s terms, but they soon forgot their promise. They started to grow taller and taller, and they soon blocked the path of the pilgrims who were traveling to the Himalayas. The pilgrims were very angry, and they prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva was displeased with the Vindhya Mountains, and he split them into two parts. The smaller part of the Vindhya Mountains is still known as the Vindhya Mountains, while the larger part is known as the Satpura Mountains.
