Gangotri Temple
  • Gangotri Temple is located in the Himalayan Mountains in the district Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand and is one of the four pilgrimages that comprise Chota Char Dham in Uttarakhand.
  • It is a small town with a temple to the goddess Ganga in the heart, which belongs to the sacred pilgrimage routes of the Char Dhams in northern India. It is situated at an altitude of 35.84 meters on the banks of the Mandakini River.

History Of Gangotri Temple

  • According to legend, it is the place where the river descended from the sky and was freed from its lock by Lord Shiva. Then the Ganga River began to flow through the earth and the Ganga Temple was built to protect them. The original origin of the Ganges is that the Ganges River was the seat of Goddess Ganga.
  • The temple, which has been visited annually by thousands of pilgrims since the 18th century, was originally built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa while the present temple was reconstructed by the royal family of Jaipur.

How to Reach Gangotri Temple

By Air 

  • If you are going by air, then you have to fly to Jolly Grant Airport which is 250 km. far. From the airport, you can easily go by bus to the mandir. 

By Train 

  • If you are going by train, you have to go to Rishikesh Railway Station which is 232 km. far from the shrine. From the station, you can travel the rest of the distance by bus. 

By Road 

  • Gangotri has connected with road with every city of Uttarakhand and others also. So there is not any kind of problem if you are going by road.
