Story/History of Somnath Temple Gujarat

  • It is said that Somnath Mahadev Temple was built in gold by the moon, Ravan made them in silver, Lord Krishna made them in wood and King BhimDev of Anhilwad made them all in stone.. The author of the book ”Somnath Temple Campaign” by Hindu Nationalists to rebuild the shrine in the 1950s, Munshi cites historical literature and claims that the first Somnath Temples were built in the early centuries of the first millennium of wood and replaced several times.
  • When the Marathas established their authority over most of India in 1783 AD, the Marathas Queen of Indore, Ahilyabai, built another temple (Somnath Mahadev) for worship, a little further away from the original temple.

Somnath Temple Jyotirlinga

  • In 1951, India’s first president, Shri Rajendra Prasad, installed the Jyotirlinga in the original temple of Somnath. The present mandir in Gujarat was built by former Indian Home Secretary Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, architect of Prabhachander, was the one who breathed new life into the Somnath Mandir on May 11th, 1951, under the direction and leadership of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Reconstruction Of Somnath Temple
  • After being destroyed and several times rebuilt in the past, the current temple was reconstructed in Chaulukya style Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951. The destruction of Somnath Mahadev Temple, a recognized pilgrimage site in Gujarat since 1026, inspired the Persian side to commemorate their epic conquest, while on the Hindu side it inspired stories of recovery, reconstruction, and epic resistance. The reconstruction of the temple was one of the earliest acts of the Indian government – by Sardar Patel Munshi with the blessing of Mahatma Gandhi and Rajendra Prasad – making it a proud testimony of a weak nation unable to defend itself against outside attacks and determined to erase the history of bigoted alien attacks and regain its cultural heritage as the heart and soul of India.
